Young Matured Gouda Cheese
Young Matured Gouda Cheese has a smooth texture and is subtle in taste. With eight weeks of ripening the cheese is among the younger cheeses, so it remains mild and accessible. A real Gouda cheese is delicious on bread or as a finger food.
Gouda Cheese is traded for centuries in the city of Gouda and in the summer months there is still once a week a (touristic) Gouda cheese market. It is one of the most famous and most widely consumed cheeses. The name Gouda Cheese is not protected, but is generally circular in shape, has a fat content of at least 48%, and weighs between 1 and 16 kilograms. Since 2010, ‘Gouda Holland’ is a protected name by the European Commission. This name may only be used if the cheese actually comes from the Netherlands and is made from Dutch milk. Gouda cheese is frequently made in cheese factories. A handmade similar to Gouda Cheese is the Farmhouse Cheese (in dutch: boerenkaas), which is made on the farms in the region.
